Your Path to Medical Success Starts Here
US Clinical Experience (USCE) is designed to evaluate an IMG’s familiarity with U.S. hospital practices and procedures. This experience is pivotal for demonstrating your readiness to deliver medical care in the U.S. healthcare system.
Clinical Rotations: Hands-on experience in various medical specialties completed in U.S. or Canadian hospitals
Clerkships: Supervised practical training in a specific medical field
Externships: Short-term placements that provide practical exposure to U.S. medical practices.
Sub-internships: Advanced clinical training opportunities that offer deeper involvement in patient care.
Observerships: Shadowing opportunities to observe healthcare professionals
Experiences such as observerships, research opportunities, and volunteer work, while valuable, generally do not count as USCE for the purposes of residency applications.

There is no standardized method for obtaining USCE. Here are some strategies:
Networking: Utilize your professional connections to find rotations or externships. Networking with medical professionals can often lead to valuable opportunities
Direct Contact: Reach out to hospitals directly to inquire about placement opportunities. Some hospitals advertise these positions through paid services or universities
Placement Agencies: Consider working with placement agencies that specialize in matching IMGs with appropriate clinical experiences. Be sure to research agency reviews and services to ensure they meet your needs effectively.
Incorporating USCE into your ERAS application provides several advantages:
Demonstrates Competence: It showcases your ability to communicate effectively, handle high-pressure situations, and perform clinical skills within the U.S. healthcare context.
Enhances Understanding: It helps you grasp the nuances of the U.S. medical environment and build valuable professional connections.
Strengthens Your Application: USCE contributes to obtaining letters of recommendation, gaining hands-on experience, and developing essential skills for a successful medical career in the U.S.
